An exhibition by Boris GONDOV

Sculptures and paintings

27 March – 27 April 2018

Vernissage: 27 March 2018, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

San Stefano Gallery is pleased to present Boris Gondov’s exhibition Eternal and Sacred.

At times of challenge and controversy marked by denial and absence of any genuine value hierarchy, a sculptor dares to be faithful to his teacher’s lessons and to his own soul and sensitivity using a tough and deeply meaningful plastic language! In my capacity as an artist tempted by the rules and difficulties of this language, I was joyfully astonished to see in this exhibition a master who is not only addicted to the plastic language, but also to its subtle spiritual beauty materialized in his sculptures that are gentle and austere as a biblical parable.

Being a genuine plasticist in body and soul, Boris Gondov has undertaken the eternal trial of faith, going through suffering, love and sin - to the core of the plastic artform and its elevated three dimensional life. In a strangely beautiful way, the space in one of the exhibition halls is filled with the magnificent power of two sculptures called ‘Мartyr’ and ‘Song’. Their forms are large, powerful and austere preserving the warmth of wood and the mysterious life of nature. It looks as if the entire exhibition is contained and passes through these sculptures! From Jesus to the fallen angel, from the devotional tenderness of the naked bodies to the exquisite, almost celestial paintings!

This exhibition seems perfectly timed, away from the noisy crowd and high decibels of foreign and home art performances. It is intended to remind us that the truths conceived in these plastic artworks, when they have been personally suffered and understood in their spiritual sense, will always have their actuality and their own long-lasting life!
